"We thought we'd eventually have maybe 100 contractors in the Group.
In 2003, we reached more than 800 employers and just kept on going." |

Builders Insurance Company began in 1995 as a self insured Group, and since the contractors in the program didn't know how "regular" insurance companies handled safety and claims management, they started doing things the way they thought they should be done.
They put safety people in the field, training classes were held on an ongoing basis, and everyone went with the program or they were asked to find other coverage.
The same with claims - they hated the way Nevada's old monopolistic program handled claims, and sought to make their system more employer friendly and fair.
They didn't have any insurance "experts" to tell them they couldn't, so before they knew it, they had reinvented workers' comp in Nevada.
In year 2000, the self insured Group became Nevada Contractors Insurance Company, Inc, Nevada's first "Captive" insurance company. The members become stockholders, and a $5 million dividend was declared. Builders Insurance Company, Inc, a Nevada domestic insurer, was started at the same time and since then, has grown into one of the largest carriers of worker's comp in the state.
